Kava is it safe?

Updated: Jul 25, 2021

Being from Samoa a tiny south pacific island nation that traditionally has used Kava for possibly 1,000s of years I am surprised every time this question comes up, not only because in the south pacific kava has been used without issue for generations, but also at how persistent this notion of a risk to health from kava consumption is.

Given standard factors such as good production practices from farm to you, kava consumed as it has been in the islands and in moderation has been shown to be safe and relaxing.

The statistics of detrimental side effects has been assessed as low by the WHO. There are some genetic predispositions that may affect consumers and whilst in the pacific islands water extraction of kavalactones has been the method for thousands of years modern use of organic solvents might have caused unintended side effects, I enjoy traditional water extraction regularly and occasionally a non alcoholic kava Pina Colada, a truely enjoyable way to end a long hot day.

The German administration recognised the excellent soil quality in Samoa and planted the best varieties of coconut, coffee, cacao and rubber trees they also brought in donkeys to improve efficiency of harvesting, this is still an option for todays harvesting operations as migratory workers are removed from the work force regularly to pick crops in New Zealand and Australia.

Good soil and climate produce great herbs, spices and kava.
