Where we are working

Our farm is on the island of Upolu in Samoa at 1000ft on the northern hillside of Upolu island about 13.88° S, 171.86° W. We replace invasive species and preserve old native trees, we also use multi cropping to maintain soil quality, between kava, turmeric, ginger, black pepper, are planted rows of moringa and dadap (Eythrina submbrams Dadap) to provide shade and fix nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.

Guava and ylang ylang will be added later to build a more complex root system, taro which is a low glycaemic staple root crop much better than imported grains provides food and as a cash crop.

A multi crop farm is important to demonstrate methods for sustainable farming in Samoa as there is much evidence of soil degradation due to virgin forest felling for access to nutrient rich soils. In some areas there has been a failure to preserve some trees for soil stability, sadly much virgin forest has already been cut.

Originally a cattle farm we are in the process of re-establishing native trees and developing a multi crop plantation focused on herbal superfoods. Although we are working on this project privately we will be joining the ministry of agriculture and fisheries of Samoa to develop awareness of herbal superfoods and multi cropping methods and rebuild our stock of the best kava variety.

Only a holistic approach to farming and wellness is sustainable, therefore re-establishing or maintaining natural fertility of the tropical island soil will reward us with nutrient rich herbs that might help improve and maintain our wellbeing.
